English word power at your fingertips2/14/2023 ![]() ![]() In these chapters, we’re also introduced to Angelou’s mother - who was somewhat of an anomaly - as she and her brother were raised by their grandmother, Momma. ![]() Angelou recalls graduating from 8th grade and her brother, Bailey, has a close encounter with racial violence. I personally deem chapters 23 through 26 the most important. The story serves as a personal memoir highlighting the racism, sexism and the personal challenges she faced growing up as a Black girl in Arkansas, circa the 1930s.Īs Angelou takes us through the different eras of her young life, the language changes ever so slightly and you feel as if you’re going through her formative years alongside her. It’s become a tradition for me to reread Maya Angelou’s words every summer.Īngelou’s language and writing style bring the autobiography to life. ![]() The crease in the binding and the discolored pages show how many times I’ve read it, over and over again, since freshman year.
